Q&A

How has TSG’s culture helped drive the firm’s success?

TSG has a strong culture of putting integrity first. When exploring potential new deals, we always make sure that we are excited about being in business with the entrepreneur who has built the brand. Having that mutually beneficial relationship between partners who trust each other to do the right thing with a business has been a key driver of our success.

What attracted you to the business of brand building?

Brands have a powerful effect on everybody and impact our daily lives. I remember when I was a kid, I saw a Sprite commercial where Michael Jordan took a drink of Sprite and then dunked a ball from the free-throw line. I’d never had a Sprite, but I drank my first one that very same day. That memory sticks with me when I look for brands that truly connect with their end consumers today.

What are the keys to building a successful brand?

I think consumer trust is always critical in any successful brand. More and more consumers are looking for brands that reflect their personal beliefs and values. While fulfilling a consumer need is a necessity, great brands find a way to connect with customers and earn that trust in everything they do.

How do you build trust with entrepreneurs you’ve just started to work with?

Building trust with our partners is one of the most important pieces of our job. There’s no better way to do this than simply working with them on the ground. Our partners look to us to be more than just a sounding board. We really add value in a relationship by rolling up our sleeves with entrepreneurs and working with them to solve the problems they face every day.

There is a lot of competition in the private equity world. What has that competition taught you and how has it made you better at your job?

Competition helps us get better at our jobs every day. With so many groups with capital to invest, we work to differentiate ourselves to potential partners via our deep experience. We have the benefit of having worked with amazing brands throughout TSG’s history, and we bring that experience to work to help our partners grow, which helps set us apart from our competitors.
